1. Nagara Style -

Nagara style is a style of temple architecture. This style is popular in Northern , Western & Eastern India.

Some more features of Nagara Style -:

1. There is a linear peak above the sanctum sanctorum.

2. The peak tapers upwards according to its height.

3. The temple also had a meeting hall and circumambulation path.

Dravidian Style -: 

Dravidian style is one of the three styles of South Indian Hindu architecture.

This style was developed in South India.

Most of the temples in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas are built in this style.

Some more features of Dravidian Style -: 

1. The base of the temple is square.

2. The peak above the sanctum sanctorum is primatic or pyramidal.

3. The entrance of these temples is called Gopuram.

4. The main tower of the temple is called Vimana.

Brihadeshwar temple in Tanjore.

Kailash temple in Ellora.

Chennakeshava temple in Bellur.


Vesara Style -: 

Vesara style is one of the three major styles of Indian Hindu  architecture.

It is a mixed form of Nagara and Dravidian styles.

The shape of temples of this style is circular or semi - circular from base to peak.

Some more features of Vesara style -: 

1. Temples of this style are found from Vindhyachal Mountains to Krishna rivers.

2. Vesara style is also called Chalukya style.

3. This style developed most in the Deccan region.


1. Konark Sun Temple :

Located in  - Orissa

Also called Black Pagoda.

Declared a world Heritage site by UNESCO - 1984

Built in the 13th Century - King Narshimha dev-1 of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty.

2. Meenakshi Temple : 

Located in - Madurai (Tamil Nadu)

Temple is an example of Dravidian Style.

Situated on the banks of Vairagi river in Madurai city.

Temple dedicated to Parvati.

Built by Kulshekhara Pandaya.

Chithirai festival is celebrated every year in Meenakshi temple in Madurai.

3. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple : 

Located in - Madhya Pradesh

Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Temple is situated on the banks of Narmada river.

There are 12 Jyotirlingas in India of which two are in Madhya Pradesh i.e. Ujjain & Omkareshwar.

4. Swaminarayan Akshardham temple : 

Located in - New Delhi 

5. Golden Temple / Harminder Saheb : 

Located in - Amritsar (Punjab)

Operation Blue star is related to Golden Temple.

Hazrat Mia Mir Ji laid the foundation of the golden temple.

Guru Arjun Dev was the Sikh Guru who built the Golden Temple.

11. Jagannath temple : 

Located in - Puri (Orissa)

The ruler of Ganga Dynasty had built the Jagannath temple of Puri.

Anantavarman Chod built the famous Jagannath temple in Puri.

In 1955 - Shri Jagannath temple act was passed.

The idols of Lord Jagannath , Subhadra & Balabhadra in the sanctum sanctorum of Jagannath Puri temple are made of wood.

Where is Rath Yatra , the festival of chariots of Lord Jagannath , celebrated avery year - Puri .
