India Ends Paris Paralympics 2024 With 29 Medals.
India takes home 29 medals in total from the Paris Paralympics 2024 campaign: seven gold, nine silver, and thirteen bronze.
Sunday marked the end of the Paris Paralympic Games 2024 for India, with Pooja Ojha being the last competitor to compete. Ojha withdrew from the tournament after failing to make it to the women's 200-meter kayak final.
Consequently, India's medal total in the Paris Paralympics was 29—seven gold, nine silver, and thirteen bronze—making it the nation's most lucrative campaign. India was ranked 18th in the points table because to their 29 medals. Pakistan, who were also competing in the event, finished the campaign tied for last place at 79th place, having won just one bronze.
India performed incredibly well in the 2024 campaign, finishing among the top 20 countries in the world at the Paris Para Games after defeating elite nations like Switzerland, Belgium, South Korea, Turkey, Argentina, and so on.
The traditional heavyweights of the Paralympic Games, such as China, Great Britain, the USA, Italy, and others, performed remarkably well, placing in the top 10 countries, in contrast to India. India would be eager to put on an even stronger performance at the LA Para Games in 2028 after making major strides in Paris.
With Navdeep Singh's gold in the men's javelin throw F41 division on Saturday, India won its 29th and last medal in the Paris Paralympic Games.
Competing in the short-stature athlete category, Navdeep's first medal was a silver, following his 47.32-meter throw that overtook China's Sun Pengxiang, the world record holder.
But after Iran's Sadegh Beit Sayah was disqualified for continuously flying an offensive banner, that was elevated to an unprecedented gold. Silver went to Pengxiang (44.72m) for her finish.
With a new Paralympic record of 47.64 meters in his penultimate throw, Sayah had managed to edge out the competition, but his antics cost him the medal.
Sayah's actions were deemed unsportsmanlike and improper, resulting in her elimination from the final standings. The International Paralympic Committee prohibits athletes from making any political gestures during the competition.
Simran finished third in the women's 200m (T12) race at the same venue with a personal best time of 24.75 seconds, guided by Abhay Singh.
The 24-year-old Delhi native is the current world champion in her category. It was discovered that she was vision handicapped at the time of her early birth. She had placed fourth in the current Games' 100-meter competition, and Saturday's medal allowed her salvage her campaign.
This total includes 17 medals from track and field, including 4 gold ones. The nation is ranked 15th overall, behind China, which has 208 medals total—90 of which are gold.
For Navdeep, the gold atones for the heartache of finishing fourth in the Tokyo Games.
Since taking up the sport in 2017, Navdeep, an inspector in the Income Tax Department, has won five medals at the national level. Earlier this year, he took home a medal at the para-world championships.
Conversely, Simran took home three gold medals in the 100m, 200m, and long jump at the first-ever Khelo India Para Games in December of last year, in addition to two silver medals from the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou the previous year.
Her spouse, Naik Gajendra Singh, is her coach.
